At long last, a strange and dangerous ban has finally been lifted off of Western Australia. Many MMA fans have been waiting for this outdated and frankly stupid law to be changed. Most promotions were defeated by this ban that was put in place back in 2013, leaving WA the only place in the world where MMA was legal, but the cage not. This left Eternal MMA reverting back to the boxing ring for their bouts. Since then, both the Eternal MMA & UFC have been campaigning to lift the cage ban.
With UFC contender Robert Whittaker currently tearing through the Middleweight division, a UFC title fight may not be too far away for WA. Whittaker is facing Yoel Romero, an Olympic wrestler with an impressive MMA record of 13-1 at UFC 213. The winner of the bout will be next in line for a shot at the title currently being held by English born champ Michael Bisping. Whittaker's most recent win, a very impressive TKO over BJJ superstar, Ronaldo "Jacaré" Souza left no doubt in my mind that he's easily one of the most exciting fighters in the 185 pound division.
UFC have already been making eyes at Perth Arena and Dana White has said he'd love to see a title fight in WA, and what better way to welcome the cage than a Middleweight war.
